Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy
There are many myths and misconceptions about hypnosis.
Most of what we are familiar with is stage hypnosis, where an entertainer brings people up on stage and they "forget" what they are doing or seem out of control. We laugh as people eagerly eat onions or cluck like a chicken.
But hypnosis is so much more than this. Hypnotherapy is actually a way to speak with the programs that run your mind for effecting real and lasting change. Have you ever experienced self-sabotage, almost like, "a part of me wants to do this and a part of me doesn't?"
If there is a part of us that doesn't want to change, we experience cravings and self sabotage, such as smoking when we want to quit or overeating when we want to lose weight. This can be very compelling because these parts work at the unconscious level. If you want to create real and lasting change, you need to align the deeper awareness, even the unconscious level with your conscious goals.
Our mind works like an iceberg. The top part of the iceberg that we see above water is like our conscious mind, this is our action - planning, goal - setting mind, Consciously we know what we want to create or the change we want to make.
Then, right below this level, is the layer just below the surface. This is like our subconscious mind, where our mind keeps information that is easy to retrieve, or that we view often or recently. This is like thinking of your phone number or address.
Then, below that is the unconscious mind, which is our deeper awareness that stores all our experiences. Think of your 5th birthday, what about your 10th birthday? Most of us don't remember it because its so far in the past. This is how the brain works for efficiency, it lays our memories down one on top of the other, so that the easiest memories to access are the most recent and at the top of the pile.
But our past can affect our perceptions and how we see life, it can also account for the problems that we experience. One client of mine had been overweight most of his life. It didn't seem to matter what he did, he couldn't lose weight. Then, working with the tools of NLP and Hypnosis, he remembered an event, when he was 9 years old, he was bullied by a group of older kids. He thought, "if only I were bigger, they couldn't pick on me." This then started an unconscious program to grow bigger. He couldn't grow taller, so he grew wider as a directive from the unconscious mind.
Hypnosis helps you align your deeper self (unconscious mind) to be on track with your conscious goals. With this alignment, habit and pattern change happens so easily and naturally, it's almost automatic!
